A Fender Squire Pack with the amp and everything you need is a good buy. Othe brands of equal value are available.

Actually, your fingers are the tone producers, everything else is relative. For cheap with lots of variety, go with a Squier, it has a 5-way switch that gives you more SOUNDS than any other. Tone you'll have to work on.

In an electric guitar, the tone is mostly generated by the amp-speaker, the pedals, and the pick-ups. Any decent cheap guitar--a Rogue or a middling Washburn, etc.--can get some mad tones with the right combination of pedals and a quality amp. You will NOT get any further with tone than what your amp and speaker will support, so I'd recommend putting most of your bucks there--perhaps buying a good used unit from a reputable shop.

I'd recommend that you try out several different set-ups--go to Sam Ash or some other music shop that will let you get your hands on the guitar and the amp and some pedals, and ask their knowledgeable sales clerk about how to generate the tone you want.
